I discovered splendid Sycamore Canyon of the Pajarita Wilderness along the Arizona–Mexico border quite some time ago. Trekking the canyon is tough: it's a remote, biologically rich riparian corridor carved through rugged desert hills with virtually no trails. Fed by seasonal flows of Sycamore Creek and shaped by occasional floods, its shaded pools and tall trees support a rare diversity of wildlife—over 650 plant species and nearly 200 bird species, including elegant trogons near their northernmost range.

The canyon's walls of volcanic rock and its mosaic of oak, mesquite, saguaro cactus, and grassland habitats reflect the ecological crossroads of the Sonoran and Madrean regions, making it one of southern Arizona's most important natural sanctuaries.
