The Rich Coast's Legacy

Named "Rich Coast" by Spanish explorers in the early 1500s, Costa Rica gained independence in 1821 and abolished its military in 1948, becoming a beacon of peace and democracy. Today, while protecting over 25% of its land as national parks and reserves, the nation faces challenges from deforestation, overdevelopment in tourist areas, and balancing conservation with economic growth—yet remains a global leader in environmental protection and sustainable tourism.
