Understanding Arizona's Desert Monsoon

The North American Monsoon occurs from mid-June through September when shifting weather patterns draw moisture from the Gulf of California and Gulf of Mexico northward into the Sonoran Desert. These powerful summer thunderstorms can drop inches of rain in minutes, filling dry washes and creating temporary pools that reflect the desert sky. Monsoon provides roughly half of southern Arizona's annual rainfall, sustaining desert ecosystems and creating brief moments bathed in beauty.
