A Valley of Layered History
Few landscapes in America carry deeper history than the Santa Cruz River Valley, stretching from Nogales at the Mexican border northward through Tubac, Tumacácori, and Tucson.
The river itself begins to the east in the magnificent San Rafael Valley, flowing southward into Mexico, then makes a huge U-turn northward back into the USA near Nogales.
For thousands of years, the Hohokam and later the Tohono O’odham and Akimel O’odham peoples farmed this corridor, historically a wide raparian paradise, channeling its waters with sophisticated irrigation systems. Spanish missionaries arrived in the 1690s, with Father Eusebio Kino establishing missions including Tumacácori and nearby magnificent San Xavier del Bac—still active today and called the White Dove of the Desert.
The 1800s brought Mexican ranchers, American soldiers, and silver miners to Tubac—Arizona's oldest European settlement—and the boomtown of Nogales. Agriculture flourished with and cattle ranches and farming, later with massive pecan orchards, defining the valley's character through the 20th century.
Hollywood discovered the valley's dramatic scenery early, filming countless Westerns among its ranch lands, mesquite bosques and adobe ruins. Today, Tubac thrives as an arts colony and golfing destination, while Madera Canyon draws birders & hikers worldwide, and snowbird retirees flock to communities like Green Valley.
