The Ironwood Tree

For centuries, indigenous peoples of the Sonoran Desert—such as the Tohono O'odham and Seri—used ironwood (Olneya tesota) for tools, fuel, carvings, and medicine; its dense wood made durable implements, while its shade and fallen pods supported food systems for humans and animals. Ironwood grows across the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, California, and Mexico, where it acts as a keystone “nurse plant” supporting diverse desert life. This tree is at risk due to habitat loss from development, invasive plants such as buffelgrass, and poaching for carving and fuel.

Wildlife and Natural Heritage

This stark landscape is home to rare and precious species including, of course, the vulnerable ironwood tree, desert bighorn sheep and the threatened cactus pygmy-owl. Scattered throughout the monument are historic cultural sites, even the site of a colonial Spanish mission.
