Rugged Majesty and Serene Light - Hollywood's Backdrop by Murray Bolesta

The dry desert of southern California supports this dramatic rock country which is instantly recognizable from countless movies filmed in the Alabama Hills region. A trail leads to the top of the highest peak in the lower 48 states, Mount Whitney. My landscape photography captures magical features of this place with skillful use of light and shadow!

Eastern Sierra's Cinematic Legacy

For over a century, Hollywood has filmed Westerns and adventure movies against the Alabama Hills' striking red rock formations beneath snow-capped Sierra Nevada peaks. Classics like "Gunga Din" (1939), "High Sierra" (1941), and "Gladiator" (2000) utilized this dramatic contrast of desert and alpine landscapes.

Geography and Heritage

The Owens Valley, home to towns like Lone Pine, Bishop, and Independence, sits between the towering Sierra Nevada and the White-Inyo Mountains. Paiute and Shoshone peoples inhabited this region for thousands of years before European settlement. The contrast of rust-colored Alabama Hills against the brilliant white Sierra crest creates one of California's most photographed landscapes.
