Monterey Peninsula Fine Art for Your Walls

Experience the Monterey Peninsula through this distinguished collection of fine art photography by Murray Bolesta. My art captures the cultural and natural history of this sublime collision of land and sea.

Monterey: California's Historic Capital

Monterey served as the capital of both Spanish and Mexican California, making it the political and cultural center of early California. Monterey State Historic Park preserve adobe buildings and gardens that tell the story of California's transformation from Spanish colony to Mexican territory to American state.

Carmel Mission: Spiritual Heart of California

Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, founded in 1770 by Father Junípero Serra and moved to Carmel, became the headquarters of the entire California mission chain. Father Serra is buried here, and the mission served as the administrative and spiritual center for all 21 California missions.

Monterey Bay: Maritime Heritage

Monterey Bay became famous for its sardine fishing industry immortalized in John Steinbeck's Cannery Row. Today, the bay is protected as a National Marine Sanctuary, one of the largest in the United States, safeguarding the spectacular Monterey Bay Submarine Canyon and its rich marine life.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Artist Colony Charm

Carmel-by-the-Sea, founded as an artist colony in the early 1900s, has maintained its storybook character through strict preservation ordinances. With no street addresses, no chain restaurants, and European-style cottages nestled among Monterey pines, Carmel remains a haven.

Point Lobos: A Citizen-Led Triumph

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, often called "the crown jewel of the State Park System," was saved from development through heroic citizen efforts. In the early 1900s, A.M. Allan purchased the land to protect it, and after his death, conservationists led by the Save-the-Redwoods League rallied to preserve this spectacular headland. In 1933, Point Lobos became a state reserve, protecting "the greatest meeting of land and sea in the world."

My Art, Capturing the Peninsula's Soul

These artworks showcase my unique skill for revealing the region's layered beauty:

  • Dramatic coastal landscapes: Rugged headlands, pristine coves, ancient cypress trees, and crashing Pacific surf
  • Cultural landmarks: Historic missions, adobe buildings, and artist colony charm
  • Iconic locations: 17-Mile Drive, Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove
  • Timeless character: The essence of California's splendid coastline
