Bodie's Gold Rush Legacy

Founded in 1859 following the discovery of gold, Bodie boomed into a mining town of nearly 10,000 residents by 1880, complete with saloons, gambling halls, and a reputation for lawlessness. After the mines played out in the early 1900s, Bodie was gradually abandoned. Today, Bodie State Historic Park preserves 200 structures in a state of "arrested decay"—park officials do a splendid job of stabilizing and protecting these fragile buildings without restoration, maintaining their authentic ghost town character.
