For thousands of years, the Pomo people thrived along this rugged coastline, harvesting the sea's bounty and living in harmony with the land. In the early 1800s, Russian fur traders established Fort Ross as their southernmost outpost, hunting sea otters and trading with indigenous peoples. After the Russians departed, American settlers arrived, transforming the coast through logging the virgin redwood forests, fishing the rich Pacific waters, and establishing farms on the coastal terraces.
