A Unique Coastal Wonder

McWay Falls is one of only two year-round waterfalls in California that flow directly onto a beach (the other being Alamere Falls). Located in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park along the dramatic Big Sur Coast between Carmel and San Simeon, this extraordinary waterfall drops from granite cliffs onto a crescent beach.

From Private Estate to Public Treasure

Unbelievably, this precious place was once private property. The falls' history reflects California's conservation legacy: In the 1920s, Lathrop and Helen Hooper Brown built Waterfall House on the bluff overlooking the cove, creating a private estate they called "Saddle Rock Ranch." After Lathrop's death in 1962, Helen Brown donated the property to California State Parks, ensuring this spectacular landscape would be preserved for public enjoyment rather than succumbing to development. The park was named for Julia Pfeiffer Burns, a respected Big Sur pioneer and rancher.
