Collection: Native American Petroglyph Rock Art

Native American Petroglyph Fine Art Photographs!

Experience Native American rock art through this small, distinguished collection of fine art photography by Murray Bolesta. Each artwork captures the legacy of indigenous peoples across the Western United States—ancient messages carved and painted on stone that connect us to cultures spanning thousands of years.

Ancient Voices on Stone

Throughout the Western United States, petroglyphs (images carved or pecked into rock surfaces) and pictographs (images painted on rock) preserve the artistic and spiritual expressions of Native American peoples. Created over millennia—some dating back 10,000 years or more—these rock art sites served many purposes: recording astronomical events, marking territorial boundaries, depicting hunting scenes, expressing spiritual beliefs, telling stories, and simply expressing oneself. From the Colorado Plateau to the Great Basin, from the Sonoran Desert to the Columbia River Gorge, these irreplaceable cultural treasures offer windows into ancient ways of life and thought.

Treasures at Risk

These precious cultural resources face mounting threats on multiple fronts:

Natural weathering: Wind, rain, freeze-thaw cycles, and biological growth gradually erode rock surfaces, slowly obscuring images that have survived for millennia.

Climate change impacts: Human-caused climate change accelerates deterioration through increased dust storms that abrade delicate surfaces, altered precipitation patterns that intensify weathering, and temperature extremes that stress rock substrates.

Vandalism: Tragically, thoughtless visitors damage rock art through graffiti, touching (oils from hands degrade pigments), chalking (to enhance photos), and even deliberate destruction. Each act of vandalism erases irreplaceable pieces of cultural heritage.

Protecting these sites requires resources, vigilance, education, and respect for the indigenous cultures whose ancestors created these enduring works of art.
