Lake Tahoe Fine Art Prints by Murray Bolesta – Keep Tahoe Blue!

Love the majestic beauty of Lake Tahoe through this distinguished collection of fine art photography by Murray Bolesta. Each of my artworks captures the essence of this fabulous alpine lake—an iconic symbol of the American West, where crystalline waters meet snowy Sierra peaks and Ponderosa pines tower in breathtaking harmony.

A Lake Like No Other - Everyone's Fave!

Lake Tahoe, straddling the California-Nevada border at 6,225 feet elevation, is North America's largest alpine lake and the second-deepest in the United States. Emerald Bay  became California's first underwater state park in 1994, protecting the only island in Lake Tahoe—Fannette Island—and the historic Vikingsholm castle built in 1929. Mark Twain famously called Tahoe "the fairest picture the whole earth affords." The word Tahoe is likely a mispronunciation of the Washoe Tribe's name for it: da-ow-a-ga.

Why Not a National Park?

Despite its uniqueness, Lake Tahoe never became a national park due to its complex bi-state jurisdiction and extensive private development dating to the 1800s silver rush era. Instead, preservation falls to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and the League to Save Lake Tahoe whose "Keep Tahoe Blue" campaign has become legendary. The U.S. Forest Service manages surrounding wilderness areas including Desolation Wilderness.

Capturing Tahoe's Essence

My artworks showcase the lake's legendary beauty:

  • Emerald Bay's splendor: The jewel that defines Lake Tahoe's romantic appeal
  • Crystalline blue waters: The famous clarity and cobalt depths that inspired "Keep Tahoe Blue"
  • Sierra Nevada grandeur: Dramatic mountain backdrops rising above the alpine shore
  • Seasonal magic: From summer's azure brilliance to winter's snow-draped majesty
  • Timeless romance: The essence of the American West's most beloved alpine destination

A Treasure Under Threat

Lake Tahoe's legendary clarity has declined, from 100+ feet visibility in the 1960s to around 60-70 feet today. It has stabilized over the past 20 years. Urban runoff, climate crisis, invasive species, and development pressure threaten the lake's famous blue waters. Busy nearby recreation hubs make preservation efforts more critical than ever.
