Native American Petroglyph Fine Art Prints

Celebrate Native American rock art through this small collection of fine art photography by Murray Bolesta. My artworks capture the legacy of indigenous peoples across the Western United States—ancient messages carved or painted on stone.

Ancient Voices on Stone

Throughout the Western United States, petroglyphs (images carved or pecked into rock surfaces) and pictographs (images painted on rock) preserve the artistic and spiritual expressions of Native American peoples. Created over millennia—some dating back 10,000 years or more—these rock art sites served many purposes: recording astronomical events, marking territorial boundaries, depicting hunting scenes, expressing spiritual beliefs, telling stories, and simply expressing oneself.

Treasures at Risk

These precious cultural resources face mounting threats on multiple fronts: natural weathering, impacts of climate crisis, and vandalism.

Protecting these sites requires resources, vigilance, education, and respect for the indigenous cultures.

Capturing Sacred Heritage

My images document and honor Native American rock art:

  • Ancient petroglyphs: Carved images spanning thousands of years of indigenous history
  • Cultural landscapes: Rock art in context with the dramatic Western landscapes
  • Endangered heritage: Documentation of treasures threatened by time and human impact
