Unexpected California

Siskiyou and Modoc Counties occupy California's remote northeastern corner—a vast, thinly populated rural landscape that bears no resemblance to the California of beaches, freeways, and Hollywood. This is a land of volcanic plateaus, ancient lava beds, pine forests, and wide open skies of sagebrush and juniper landscapes. Mount Shasta—one of America's most spectacular volcanic peaks—dominates the horizon, while the Klamath River, Goose Lake, Lava Beds National Monument, and the remote Warner Mountains help define a landscape of breathtaking solitude: the Real West.
