A Peninsula Apart

Point Reyes occupies a dramatic peninsula in Marin County California, separated from the mainland by the San Andreas Fault. Geologically distinct from surrounding California, it sits on a separate tectonic plate! The peninsula's Point Reyes Lighthouse, Drakes Beach, and Tomales Bay define a landscape of wonderful ecological richness.

History & Recent Change

Established in 1962, Point Reyes National Seashore preserved land long ranched by Marin County dairy families dating back to the 1850s. In 2024, following years of legal battles between conservationists and ranching interests, the National Park Service completed the removal of cattle and elk fencing, restoring the peninsula to a more natural state—a landmark conservation victory celebrated by nature lovers worldwide!
