From Working Ranch to Protected Wilderness
Muleshoe Ranch, located in the rugged Galiuro Mountains of southeastern Arizona, began as a working cattle ranch in the late 1800s. For decades, it operated as a traditional ranch until conservation groups recognized its extraordinary ecological value. In 1982, The Nature Conservancy acquired the property, transforming it from private ranch to protected preserve. Today, the 49,000-acre Muleshoe Ranch Cooperative Management Area is administered through a unique collaboration between The Nature Conservancy, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management.
Why Muleshoe Ranch Is Precious
Natural Resources: Seven perennial streams flow through the preserve—a rarity in the desert Southwest—supporting riparian habitats critical for wildlife. The ranch harbors over 200 bird species, including threatened native fish. Desert grasslands, oak woodlands, and canyon ecosystems converge in great diversity. Natural hot springs seep from the earth, offering a glimpse of the area's geothermal activity.
Cultural Heritage: The land bears traces of ancient peoples, historic ranching operations, and the challenges of desert survival. Stone structures, old corrals, and ranch buildings tell stories of those who worked this unforgiving landscape.
Remoteness: Accessible only by a long dirt road through rugged terrain, Muleshoe Ranch remains one of Arizona's most isolated preserves. This remoteness offers visitors a rare experience of true wilderness solitude.
