Architectural Icon of the Desert

Palm Springs became the epicenter of mid-century modern residential architecture in the 1950s-60s, when Hollywood stars and modernist architects created a unique desert aesthetic. Clean lines, floor-to-ceiling glass, and indoor-outdoor living defined homes by Richard Neutra, Albert Frey, and William Krisel. The city sits on Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians land, with much property leased through unique tribal land agreements. In 2017, Palm Springs made history by electing the nation's first all-LGBTQ+ city council, reflecting its long-standing reputation as a welcoming, progressive community that celebrates diversity, as well as preservation of its architectural heritage.
